Legal Assistant

In 45 weeks, learn the fundamental theoretical and practical knowledge needed to succeed in the legal field. Develop a strong foundation in areas like corporate law, family law, criminal law, real estate law, and civil law.

Our program also includes a 5-week practicum, offering hands-on experience in a legal setting.

COURSE LIST

Introduction to Law

Develop a fundamental understanding of the Canadian legal system by learning the history of Canadian law, the Constitution of Canada, the Legal Professional Act, and the rules of the provincial law societies, along with reviewing professionalism and ethics in the field.

Legal Office Procedures

Explore the practices and procedures of general law, civil litigation, family law, real estate law and wills, as well as corporate law and estates. Look into statutory amendments in legal procedures and the impact of technology on the legal profession, including procedural changes that have occurred as a result. Understand how to use electronic filing and registration systems in corporate and real estate law.

Real Estate Law & Conveyancing

Look into the substantive law of real estate by exploring conveyancing procedures, encumbrances, mortgages, and land title systems in your province.

Civil Law I

Learn the fundamentals of civil litigation, including the court litigation stage and procedures, how to prepare pre-trial and trial proceeding documents, and the procedures for action in the Provincial Court and Civil Division.

Contract Law & Administration

Learn the legal standards of domestic and international business practices with a focus on the supply chain industry in order to streamline business process and enhance overall operations. Explore how to enforce and terminate binding contracts, international trade, and corporate law.

Corporate Law I

Understand the fundamental structure of corporate businesses by becoming familiar with different types of financial agreements, the creation and requirements for transfer of businesses, and the typical documentation regarding commercial transactions.

Criminal Law

Understand the structure of the Canadian Legal System by exploring topics such as an overview of Criminal Law, Criminal Procedures, and the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

Family Law

Acquire in-depth theoretical and practical knowledge of the provincial family court system by exploring divorce, custody, child welfare, and child support while developing practical skills in areas such as completing a contested divorce file and filing procedures.

Legal Research

Understand the theoretical functions of the legal software most commonly used in law firms, including tools for time tracking, billing, and trust accounting through the exploration of platforms such as PCLaw, Clio, and ESILaw. Learn how these platforms support legal practice through demonstrations and case-based examples while developing your legal research skills as you locate and analyze legal documents, annotated reports, law reviews, and case comments. All while gaining exposure to proper citation of statutes, regulations, and case law.

Wills and Estates

Examine the laws and practices surrounding wills, trusts, and estates by exploring key areas such as estate planning, powers of attorney, mediation, probates, and ademption.

Environmental Law

Understand the fundamentals of renewable energy, sustainability, and the evolving legal landscape supporting green initiatives in Canada. Explore the societal benefits and economic opportunities of the renewable sector, and investigate how law and policy drive sustainable energy solutions. Learn about the applications and technologies of renewable energy, the role of federal and provincial policies, and the impact of energy laws such as the Carbon Tax Law.

Becoming a Master Student

Make the transition into post-secondary education easily by learning how to make the most of your chosen career education path and prepare for your new role in the workforce. Understand different learning styles, how to effectively set goals, take notes, and complete tests.

Microsoft Outlook

Learn how to manage files, edit, format, and print documents correctly while building an in-depth understanding of the common Microsoft functions necessary in the workplace.

Microsoft Word

Learn how to create, edit, and manipulate Microsoft Word documents through practical, hands-on training.

Communications and Interpersonal Skills

Develop proper speaking skills to give effective and professional oral presentations. Understand what to do before, during, and after presentations, and how to design useful and informative visual aids.

Effective Business Writing

Understand the fundamental details involved in effective workplace communication techniques that are needed in today's fast-paced environments. Learn effective written communication skills, proper communication techniques, how to communicate in specific workplace situations, and how to design essential business presentations.

Career Management

Work hands-on to build the essential skills needed to find meaningful employment opportunities in today's job market. Learn and develop essential communication skills to be successful throughout the entire job application process by understanding how to plan, write, and complete a resume, search for employment, and develop presentation skills to achieve gainful employment.
